ANFAAC highlights the scientific basis for the value of dry pet food

ANFAAC (Spanish national association of pet food manufacturers) underscores the strong scientific foundation that supports the quality, safety and nutritional value of dry pet food, a category produced under some of the most rigorous standards in Europe. As part of FEDIAF, Spanish manufacturers follow both national and EU legislation, as well as advanced industry codes of practice that ensure consistent excellence throughout the production process.

Dry pet food begins with the careful selection of raw materials, including animal‑ and plant‑based ingredients that are safe, nutritious and approved for human consumption, even when not commonly eaten for cultural or dietary reasons. Once selected, ingredients are milled and blended to achieve a uniform distribution of nutrients, ensuring complete and balanced formulations for dogs and cats.

Extrusion plays a central role in guaranteeing product safety. By applying high temperature and pressure, this technology cooks the mixture and eliminates potential pathogens. The resulting kibbles are then dried, cooled and coated to enhance palatability and shelf life before being packaged in sealed, contamination‑proof formats.

“Each kibble is the result of a controlled scientific process and precise formulation,” explains Santiago de Andrés, ANFAAC’s secretary general. He encourages pet owners to rely on verified information and trust an industry whose priority is the health and wellbeing of companion animals.
