Black Sheep Vets, an independent veterinary clinic located in the south of England and specialising in preventive medicine and animal wellbeing, has developed its own nutritional assessment and weight‑management model. The initiative stands out for its structured approach and the use of advanced body‑condition evaluation tools. Although this programme is unique to Black Sheep Vets, it is viewed as a positive step forward for the veterinary sector, illustrating how nutrition can be integrated more systematically into everyday clinical practice.
The system includes a comprehensive assessment of body condition, using the Body Condition Score (BCS) to evaluate fat coverage and the Muscle Condition Score (MCS) to assess muscle mass. This is complemented by a full dietary history, covering the main diet, treats, table scraps and any other caloric contributions that may influence the animal’s weight. This information allows the team to design realistic nutritional plans tailored to each family’s lifestyle.
As part of this strategy, the clinic has launched its Weight Clinic VIP, a service offering ongoing support, educational materials and practical tools to help owners monitor progress at home, including take‑home BCS charts.
While such services are not yet common in most practices, the initiative by Black Sheep Vets serves as an inspiring example of how veterinary nutrition can evolve towards more personalised, preventive and evidence‑based models.
