Pet Sustainability Coalition and Hill’s collaborate to reduce plastic waste in pet food

The Pet Sustainability Coalition and Hill’s Pet Nutrition have announced the creation of the Pet Specialty Store–Drop-Off (SDO) Action Collaborative, an initiative that brings together key industry players to address one of the sector’s biggest environmental challenges: managing the flexible plastic used in pet food packaging.

The group’s goal is to develop a voluntary system that reduces the amount of packaging ending up in landfills and provides companies in the sector with a practical pathway to improve their environmental footprint. According to Ana Gensini, Senior Director of Global Packaging at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the company is taking on the role of founding partner with a commitment to provide leadership and resources to establish a scalable and verified collection model within the specialty retail channel.

PetSmart and Petco have also joined this design phase, along with packaging innovators Peel Plastic Products and Morris Packaging, who will collaborate in defining the pilot program.
