Corbion has released an updated life cycle assessment (LCA) for its algae‑derived omega‑3 DHA portfolio, showing significant environmental improvements compared with its 2021 assessment.
The updated cradle‑to‑gate study, conducted in accordance with ISO 14040/44 and ISO 14067, incorporates new operational data from Corbion’s commercial‑scale production facility in Orindiúva, Brazil, as well as updated supplier information and LCA databases. The results show notable reductions per kilogram of DHA produced:
- 18–23% lower climate change impact
- 44–54% lower water use
- Reduced land‑use impacts
- Lower particulate matter emissions
These gains stem from optimised algae strains, improved fermentation and processing efficiencies, and strengthened responsible sourcing programmes. The assessment also indicates that Corbion’s algae‑derived DHA has 40–50% lower climate impact than average fish‑oil datasets included in the study, although results may vary depending on species, fishing region and processing method.
