Argenta will address EFSA’s new draft guidance for PARNUTS at its Regulatory Conference in Barcelona

EFSA has published its new draft guidance for PARNUTS, marking a turning point for teams developing feed intended for particular nutritional purposes. The document introduces a clearer and more structured framework for preparing applications, which must be built around a well‑defined entry in Regulation (EU) 2020/354 and demonstrate full coherence across claims, target species, labelling, duration of use and supporting scientific evidence.

The guidance reinforces the requirement to justify the nutritional need robustly, distinguishing it from standard feed, and to demonstrate how the product meets that need through essential nutritional characteristics, analytical data and efficacy confirmation. EFSA also introduces a tiered approach: no new studies will be required when the mode of action is already well established; otherwise, between one and three in vivo studies may be needed, depending on the strength of the available evidence.

The real challenge for companies will be to organise their evidence strategically, justify the use of data from similar products, plan analyses and stability studies from the outset, and ensure high‑quality literature searches and study reports.

This content will be explored in depth at the Regulatory Conference “Navigating the Feed and Food Regulatory Landscape”, organised by Argenta, featuring presentations from experts such as Giuseppe Luca Capodieci (FEDIAF) and representatives from associations, academia, industry and authorities.
