Innovafeed and Protix, two of the world’s leading producers of Black Soldier Fly insect protein, have joined forces to publish a joint white paper bringing together peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data and figures listed in the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) database.
The paper, titled “When Scale Lowers Carbon: A Perspective on Industrial-Scale Insect Protein”, examines how industrial-scale insect protein production can help reduce the environmental footprint of animal nutrition, drawing on comparable scientific data and widely recognised industry methodologies.
According to the two companies, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to raising the standard of evidence available to the insect ingredient sector. While Innovafeed and Protix compete commercially, they believe that the transition towards more sustainable food systems requires a common vision and collective efforts to demonstrate the contribution that insect-based ingredients can make at scale.
The companies emphasise that the objective is not to promote a single alternative ingredient, but rather to provide robust data that helps stakeholders understand the role insect-derived ingredients can play within a more sustainable animal nutrition system. To this end, they are encouraging other industry players to join initiatives built on transparency and science-based evidence.
“The future of animal nutrition will not be built around a single alternative ingredient, but around a better ingredient bowl,” the companies state in the white paper.
The publication compiles environmental performance indicators from expert-reviewed life cycle assessments and data included in the GFLI database, with the aim of providing a common reference point for feed manufacturers, pet food producers and other value chain stakeholders seeking to assess the environmental impact of insect protein.
