Europe’s direct‑to‑consumer (D2C) pet food market has become one of the continent’s most dynamic and fragmented consumer sectors. The report examines 113 brands across 28 countries, more than 8,900 products, and approximately €811 million in disclosed funding, offering a comprehensive view of how the ecosystem is structured and where it is heading.
The sector originated in major innovation hubs —primarily London and Berlin— with fresh‑food startups that reshaped the category. Over time, the map has expanded to mirror Europe’s broader economic geography: a strong concentration in high‑income Western markets, alongside rapid growth in emerging regions in the East and South.
Five hubs account for nearly half of all brands: the United Kingdom, France, Germany/DACH, Poland, and Iberia. Each has developed a distinct competitive identity. The UK leads in fresh‑cooked innovation and venture capital attraction; France remains dominant in the premium kibble segment; Germany records the highest per‑kilogram prices in Europe; and Poland has become the most dynamic Eastern hub, with brands increasingly matching Western competitors in ambition and sophistication.
Beyond these centres, the report highlights a new wave of innovation emerging from traditionally peripheral regions. In the Nordics, Baltics, and Southeast Europe, brands are breaking away from established playbooks: insect‑based proteins in Sweden, sous‑vide sausages in Denmark, and AI‑driven personalised meal plans in Spain.
Overall, the map of Europe’s D2C pet food sector reflects not just where pet ownership is high, but where entrepreneurial capital, consumer willingness to pay, and digital maturity converge. It is a rapidly expanding market with highly differentiated regional dynamics and innovation pushing into new frontiers.
