The Interzoo Awards 2026 placed the spotlight firmly on innovation within the pet food sector, with two companies standing out for their contributions to sustainability and advanced formulation: Zealandia Ltd. and dsm‑firmenich.
Zealandia Ltd., a New Zealand–based producer of sustainable dog and cat food, received the Interzoo Long Distance Award as the exhibitor travelling the furthest to Nuremberg. Beyond the symbolic recognition, its presence reflects the growing internationalisation of the premium and eco‑conscious pet food segment, where alternative proteins, ethical sourcing and full traceability are becoming decisive factors. Zealandia’s participation highlights how emerging brands from the Southern Hemisphere are increasingly influencing global formulation trends.
The other relevant accolade for the industry was the Interzoo Sustainability Award, presented to dsm‑firmenich for its algae‑based omega‑3 oil, a direct alternative to marine‑derived raw materials traditionally used in pet food. This innovation reduces pressure on fisheries, stabilises supply chains and supports more responsible formulation practices while maintaining essential nutritional value.
Together, these recognitions confirm that sustainability — from ingredient development to production models — has become a strategic pillar shaping the future of the pet food industry.
